Wk 7 Roof insulation and final ice and water shield

The copper flashing around the top of the roof is actually metal flashing painted with copper paint. The box that sits on top of the first layer of tongue and groove is ten inches deep. The total depth of the roof is fourteen and three quarter inches deep. To achieve coverage of that depth, flashing had to be purchased in twelve in rolls.

Ten days of dry was needed to complete this final section of roofing. A box around the perimeter was constructed using 2x8s and furring strips and a combination of L-brackets, corner brackets, and L-angle brackets. After the box was constructed and stained, the flashing was rolled out and using a homemade drip edge curl, we bent the edge and installed the flashing with a 1-1/2" flap over the top edge.

At the bottom of the house is a 2x4 jig to "run" the plywood up the side of the soffit and onto the roof. After installing and painting the flashing, the box was insulated with the rigid R-10 foam board, then the plywood was installed. These two steps had to happen on the same day to keep any moisture from settling in and on the insulation between the layers of the roof. After the sheathing, came another L flashing (painted black) that covered the edge of the plywood and cleaned up the edges aesthetically. The final layer of Grace Ice & Water Shield was installed the next day.
